Financial Worries in the Aftermath of COVID-19: How to Overcome Your Anxiety

The COVID-19 pandemic has impacted people all over the globe in a variety of ways. While things have opened we are still getting use to use to a “new normal” rather than things going back to the way they used to be for quite some time.

Unfortunately, the aftermath of COVID-19 has also created a lot of mental health concerns across the country (and the world).

People are coping with the loss of loved ones. Others are struggling to deal with the virus themselves. Millions of people are dealing with uncertainty at work and rising cost of living. As a result, many of the anxieties caused by this pandemic have to do with financial strain and insecurity.

In the U.S., the rate of inflation has recently risen to more than 6% and gas prices have risen more that 30%in the last year. Although many Americans are back to work the situation in the labor market is still uncertain.

If you’re dealing with financial worries in the wake of COVID-19, you’re not alone. Thankfully, there are ways to overcome your anxiety.

Stay Connected

People are social creatures. One of the major issues with this pandemic is that it has caused a lot of isolation and loneliness. It’s important to stay connected and to feel supported, especially if you’re experiencing feelings of anxiety.

If you’re worried about your financial situation and it’s causing you to have anxious thoughts, reach out to the people in your life who matter the most. You can be thankful for technology since it’s made it easier than ever to at least connect with others via video chat and over the phone.

You don’t have to struggle with your fears alone. Sometimes, a simple conversation with a loved one can help to ease your worries.

Practice Self-Care

Now, more than ever, it’s important to take care of your physical, emotional, and mental wellbeing. If you’re worried about your financial situation and it has completely taken over your thoughts, do what you can to step away from those worries for periods of time.

Anxiety can be all-consuming. So, when you notice those negative thoughts creeping in and that voice of fear trying to turn your wheels, take note and try to put a stop to it. A great way to do that is by distracting yourself with something you love.

Take a walk around the block, join a class, turn on your favorite song, or write in a journal. There is no ‘perfect’ way to practice self-care. It is a very personal thing, so try a variety of different self-care distractions until you find what works for you.

Be Proactive

Though anxiety might feel like it is taking over your life, one of the ways you can work through your financial issues is to be as proactive as possible. Now that things have re-open, consider how you might be able to meet the rising expenses.

It might be a good idea to think outside of the box if you’re looking for employment, too. Different jobs in the gig economy, for example, are thriving. If you’re looking for a way to get back on your feet, even temporarily, finding employment can help to ease some of your worries.
